In July of 2023, we celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary in Fiji.
“Should we do it? Should we just blow it all up?” Tim asked as we sat on the shore of the South Pacific Ocean on Manta Ray Island just steps from our bure.
We had arrived the day before from Nacula Island after an amazing homestay there with a local Fijian family. This family lived so simply compared to our American standards. They collected rainwater for bathing and cooking and gathered fruit and eggs from around their homestead to feed us. Their evenings were spent playing Uno with the locals and fellow travelers in the glow of a battery powered light. They did not have electricity, running water, roads, vehicles or even bicycles, yet they were the happiest, most friendly people we had ever met.
We had achieved the “American Dream” at home in Oregon with a fancy house, nice cars, great jobs that paid well and exceptional children. Why were these people so much happier than us? By external standards, we had everything and they had nothing. They were living the John 10:10 life.
About six years ago we took a month’s sabbatical with our two kids. We went on a road trip in a rented motorhome to visit many of our country’s national parks in the west. That was the best vacation we had ever taken and we grew closer as a family because of it and a seed was planted.
We had been toying with the idea of “blowing it all up” for about 8 months already when we visited Fiji. This “bomb” would involve quitting my job, selling our house, and buying a big truck and travel trailer to travel the lower 48 for thirteen months. As delicious as all of that sounded to me, it was also terrifying. We knew that if we didn’t do it, we would regret it forever and always wonder what could’ve been. We both realized that there would never be a “right” time.
So, when Tim asked me that question on the beach in Fiji, I said “Yes! Let’s just do it!”
When we got back home from Fiji last July, our plans went into overdrive as we researched all the things and ordered a big red F450 dually (Red Rover as it has been lovingly named) and a few months later an Outdoors RV 28DBS Titanium.
